Not for a moment may love be concealed , when Your name is taken…

The other day I stumbled upon this ayah from Surah Al-i’Imran and I felt a sense of peace that cannot be put into words:

“You shall not attain righteousness until you spend out1of what you love (in the way of Allah).” ~ (Quran 3:92)

I googled and found this commentary on the verse:

The real spirit of righteousness consists in the love of Allah – a love which makes man value the good pleasure of Allah above all worldly acquisitions. If the love of anything seizes a man’s mind to such an extent that he is unable to sacrifice it for the sake of the love of Allah, then that thing has virtually become an idol, and until he smashes it the door to righteousness will remain closed to him. If a man lacks this spirit, then his excessively formal and legalistic approach in religious matters can be considered no more than glossy paint over a piece of hollow, worm-eaten wood. It may be possible to deceive human beings by the sheer luster of the outer paint, but not Allah.

Masha’Allah :’) If you ever had to give up something or someone you truly loved, understand it was because Allah wants you to “attain righteousness“, goodness, piety. He wants you close. He wants to give you all the reward in this world and the next. No matter how *seemingly* bad or hopeless the situation seems, take a deep breath and accept it. Don’t question, don’t complain, don’t “why me” it, just simply accept His will because whatever happens, whatever He plans and whatever He does, it is only for YOUR own good.

You want to drown, He is teaching you to swim against the tide.

You want to be the victim, He is teaching you to fight.

Understand that He is breaking all your emotional ties to this world. That does not mean that you will be a cold and distant person, NO! He is giving you wisdom, understanding so that every little thing that you do is solely for the sake of Allah. When you love something, you do it for Allah. When you leave something, you do it for Allah. Because everything is going to perish, and everyone is going to leave, it is only Allah who is Eternal, He is The Beginning and The End. Let people judge but know in your heart that He is NEVER leaving your side. When you have Allah there is nothing else you need.

1I understand that as the literal meaning goes it implies spending in monetary terms but “spending out of what you love” can also be taken as “giving up what you love” for the sake of Allah. It could be anything – Money, job, a person, some habit. The idea is simple though, between your most beloved thing in this world and Allah, what would you choose?

  1. Lovely.
I so needed this, really. “Don’t question, don’t complain, don’t “why me” it, just simply accept His will because whatever happens, whatever He plans and whatever He does, it is only for YOUR own good.

You want to drown, He is teaching you to swim against the tide.”

You have mentioned a great point here, Hina. We ask ‘why me’ in times of sorrow, but do we ask that in times of blessings? He offers his divine love, He looks for what is best for us, only that we are too impatient to let time reveal things that we can not see.

  2. An eye opener for me. I guess I have this attittude that is somewhat hard headed since I cannot accept the fact that what is happening to my life currently and what Im doing to myself is something I shouldn’t be worried. I am trying to absorb the fact that this is happening is a trial that I needed to pass…Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this. It is very overwhelming to read words coming from you.
